Three Poker Queens (Myself, Maria and Chris L) entered the #5 re-buy at Gutshot last night.

We all ended up on very different tables playing very different styles of players.

Maria's table was completely manic, largely led by one guy going all in on every hand. Maria said he must have spent at least #100 in re-buys! This led to a game which bore little or no resemblance to poker but which Maria however enjoyed. The table was friendly and welcoming and fun. Everybody, however, due to the style of play spent a lot in re-buys.

My table was full of Gutshot regulars. All of them seemed to know each other and all took their game very seriously. It was friendly but serious and reserved. I played much too tight in the re-buy period and although I only spent an extra fiver on a top-up before the break this still left me with a short stack of 1000 chips. Co-incedentally Maria had exactly the same number of chips at the break although the manic style on her table caused her to spend a little more!

Chris on the other hand said that his table was not particularly friendly, with some back-biting and bad feeling emerging. He however did much better in the first period and hit the break with about 3.5k

After a short drink and comfort break we hit the tables again and you then get the satisfaction of seeing other people go out. Unsurprisingly Mr Manic on Maria's table went all-in in the first hand of the freeze-out and was first out! He was also stuck right in the corner and had to squeeze past what seemed like everyone in the world on his marathon Walk of Shame.

Maria and I didn't last much longer however and both went out within minutes of each other about 45 mins later. With only 1000 chips and blinds at 100-200 you really have to just find a decent hand and push all in hoping to double up. My A J off suit was called by pocket queens and the board didn't help me. Next time I'm going to take more risks in the first hour and try to go back with more chips. History does not record the hand that Maria went out on but she beat me into the bar by less than three minutes.

We ruminated in the bar for about another hour swapping bad-beat stories and reviewing tactics while Chris was downstairs
piling up the chips. At the next break at 10.50 he came up to the bar, bizarrely not knowing how many chips he had (I can't imagine leaving them on the table without counting them but maybe that's just me) but saying, with characteristic modesty, that he had a 'nice big pile of those wee red ones'. They are 500's. 500 is the amount of chips we started with.

We left about an hour into the next session when there were only three tables left and Chris was chip leader at his table. We haven't heard from him today but he was definately in the top thirty and looked odds on to end up in the money. Huge congratulations for doing so well in his first live tourney!

As an aside Maria and I ate there in the bar before the game and both the club sandwich and the chicken fillet burger were tasty and good value. The standard of poker was variable but the experience of a large multi-table tournament for an outlay of 5-20 odd quid makes for a fun and reasonably priced evening's entertainment. I'm definately looking forward to going again.

Anyone want to join us?

ps CHRIS!!! Tell us where you finished.

Jinga, Crievens, help ma boab!

Sorry to leave it so late in updating this - Been a busy day at work, and i'm a bit knackered.

I only went along to see what it was like, and have a bit of fun. Didn't really want to spend more that £5 (I though that was the point of these things), but I was amazed to see people rebuying umpteen times in the first half hour.

Anyway, I had quite a lucky night - Which kinda made a few people turn on me, cos they knew I was a beginner, but who cares.

In the end, I managed to get to 12th place, all from my initial £5 buy in.
I went all in with an ace and a king, and was beaten on the flop by low full house (something like 44 666).

Bearing in mind this was 01:15, I was kinda glad to be out - My concentration had gone to pot, and I was more worried about facing the other half when I got home, than making it to the final table.

I'm glad Anton & Maria were around otherwise I might have got lynched in the corner - well, it wasn't that bad really, but it was good to have some friendly faces.

Will write a bit more when I have time.

I won £26, which is ok, but probably won't cover the cost of the meal i'm taking Martyn out to make up to him with.

I think top prize was about £700, but it's a bit of a blur to be honest.

Things I learned.

On the flop - They reveal each card one by one. I was the only dealer who did the 3 at a time flop!

3 people are involved in the deal.
Person to the left of the dealer shuffles - Person the the right of dealer cuts - Dealer deals.

It's not a good idea to whoop at an exciting flop.

It's also not a good idea to clap when people are out - Though I kept doing this throught it night.

When several people go all in - It helps if you have Carol Vordeman on hand to explain who gets what.

I need to clarify the 'best of 5 cards' rule as I think they were playing something a wee bit different. Will explain at the next game.

I've posted a question about this on the Gutshot site. I'll let you know what responses I get.
