January 29th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
8 players, £16 pool
1st Anton £12
2nd Mark £4
3rd Christian
4th Richard
5th Dave
6th Catherine
7th Jack
8th Emma
Our biggest game of the season this year, with Christian making a comeback.
It was Cardmaggedon from the off, with high betting on the first hand. Even more Cardmaggedon in the second hand, with Emma and Richard all in against each other on the fourth card, with 3 A 3 3 on the board.
Emma had KQ, Richard AQ, and the last card (T) failed to help Emma. Left with 40 chips, she managed to double up a few hands later winning with A3 against Christian's 9 9. Sadly she was soon out, her KT being no match for Anton's AA.
At this point Emma very kindly offered to deal for the table.
Anton decided to play his next hand blind, with Mark being the only caller. A few raises with plenty of chips in the pot saw neither player hit the board of 3 8 4 6 T (Anton with KJ, Mark with A9).
Christian was all in a few hands later with a board of 6 Q 5, Catherine weighing up her options before calling. Catherine's 7 7 didn't improve against Christian's A A.
Catherine then went all in with A2, Mark calling with KQ. A board of 4 J A 7 2 saw Catherine double up and stay in.
Richard had a taste of his own medicine - his raise was out-raised by Anton who went all in, and Richard did the decent/cowardly thing by folding.
A few hands later Mark raised. Dave, running low on chips, went all in. Mark had 8 8, Dave A 9, and an Ace on the Turn saw him double up and stay in.
Some more high-rolling better between Christian and Jack. Christian decides to check on the flop, and Jack decides to show everyone his cards (A . Christian, with a slight advantage, won the pot.
INTERMISSION. Is this report getting boring?
Jack seemed to have disappeared down the road, but we kept him blinded in whilst Dave and Catherine showed down a hand; Dave's 7 7 beating off Catherine's A 8. (More double-entendres later).
Mark, having not played much, then went all in with J Q, with Richard calling with K 9. A Q on the flop saw Mark double up.
Next out was Jack on account of him not being at the table.
Shortly afterwards, Dave knocks out Ellis with his A 4 beating her A 3, a 4 on the river just to rub it in.
Then Anton doubled up against Richard, his K J beating Richard's A T, a Jack rescuing him on the river.
Then, sadly, Dave was out, his 7 7 beaten by Anton's A K with an Ace on the turn.
Four left, with Mark doubling up again, a Q T beating Anton's A 2 with a Q on the flop.
Richard, now depleted to 600 chips, went all in with 8 9, Mark called with 7 7. Richard got close to his straight with a board of 2 T A T J, but no cigar and he was out.
Bubble time, with Christian losing a lot of chips when his Q 8 which failed to improve against Anton's 5 5. Now depleted and forced all in with 5 9, Anton knocked him out Jack-high with J 5.
Heads up between Mark and Anton lasted only a few hands, with Mark all in with 8 5 against Anton's 6 4; a 6 on the river ensuring yet another victory for Anton.
Congratulations, and see you at the next game!
PS, some of the double-entendres worthy of a Carry On movie:
"Many a man have nearly wet themselves over me."
"I have to do it when the knob comes round?"
"More of a flap than a flop."
"Enjoying getting your chops round my cake? Sufficiently firm?"
"Can someone put Christian's in?"
"Jack doesn't have to put one in."
"Flop it out, Emma."
"Just came from his sweaty hand."
"Naomi said something that was her fault."
"Get your green balls checked out."
"A cheese made by cursing Yorshireman - Edam."
"On top of Richard."
"Has Dave gone all in?"
"Anton, just 'cause you don't like me looking."
"A deep c*** would be wasted on Christian."
"Dave put in a thick stack."
"Anton dropped his cheesy bag."
"It gets harder."
"Don't just play with them, put them in or put them away." |

February 5th 2012
Sunday Evening SLT £2 freezeout
6 players, £12 pool
1st Mark
2nd Emma
3rd Catherine
4th Anton
5th Richard
6th Chris
Without a doubt, the drunkiest came of the year, Chris made the biggest mistake of the night before a card was dealt - Deciding that he wasn't going to drink (having been in the pub all afternoon watching football)
Being sober at a poker table of this drunken magnitude, was a pretty horrendous experience!
First highlight of the evening was when Chris raised the stakes to 150, after a bit of thought Richard Called, then when Chris as dealer tidied up the mucked hands to get ready for a super flop, he stupidly adding his own hand to the muck. Silly boy.
A few hands later, and Emma seemed to have built up a strong enough image to get everyone to fold to her.
Firstly with a meagre 75 bet, everyone folded on a flop with an Ace
Then, with A♦ K♣ J♥ flop, Richard bets 150, called by Emma, flop came 4♣, both checked, river came 10♦, Emma bet 200, which proved enough to take the sizeable pot as Richard folded.
20:25
Our first ALL IN of the night, with Anton betting 435 total preflop.
Chris called, and we had a race.
Anton (all in) with a pair of 7's, against Chris' A♦ K♦ (odds were approx 52% to 48% in Antons favour)
Flop came 2, A, 7, Q, 2, with Anton making a Full House and doubling up.
20:35
Next all in came 10 minutes later, with Richard ALL IN for 675 chips.
Chris had initially bet 150, and Richard's ALL IN gave Chris a decision to make. After losing the last race, he though it worth another go can called.
Richard showed a pair of 10s, against Chris A J. (odds were approx 57% to 43% in Richards favour)
Flop came 4, 4, 7, 2, 9, making Richard win with two pair, and double up.
Break at 21:00, and everyone survived.
First out was Chris though, after being on big blind, (100), he raised preflop ALL IN for 325 chips.
Emma called, leaving Chris K♣ 10♣ up against Emmas A♣ 8♠ (odds were approx 55% to 45% in Emmas favour)
I didn't record the flop, but suffice to say, Emma won, and Chris was knocked out.
Chris dealt for the rest of table from this point
21:35
Richard was next to depart,
with a flop of J♥ K♦ 3♦, both Richard and Emma continue with bets of 300.
Turn card was A♦, Emma bet out with 300, and was raised ALL IN 1175 by Richard.
Emma called. Rich was holding K♣ 9♦, against Emmas Q♣ 10♣ (odds were approx 80% to 20% in Emmas favour)
with a 7♥ on the river, Emma won the pot with a straight, taking chip lead, and Richard was out.
21:45
Mark goes all in with 600 chips, called by chip lead Emma.
Mark shows J♦ K♦, against Emmas pair of 10's. (odds were approx 54% to 46% in Emmas favour)
However, flop came 5♦ 2♥ 10♦ Q♦ 9♦, with Mark doubling up with his flush.
Play is interrupted with a blaize snuff invasion, but Anton sprung to action, and earned himself a new table nickname - The snuff fluffer
21:55
Anton goes all in for 460 chips, called by Emma.
Anton shows 7♠ 8♦, against Emmas 8♣ J♠ (odds were approx 70% to 30% in Emmas favour)
The flop comes 2♦ 3♦ 8♥ A♠ 5♣, leaving Emma the winner with a pair of 8's, but with a higher kicker, and Anton out.
22:00
Catherine is all in for 645, but Emma shows that despite being massive chip lead, she has it in her to FOLD.
22:05
A family pot gives us a flop of Q♣ 6♥ 4♠.
Catherine goes all in for 345 chips, Mark folds, but Emma doesn't.
Catherine shows J♠ 4♥, against Emmas 4♣ k♣ (odds were approx 87% to 13% in Emmas favour)
The turn and river come 3♥ A♦, leaving Emma the winner with a pair of 3's, but with a higher kicker, and Catherine out.
Head to head, Mark v Emma, with Emma the massive chip lead.
22:10
After a flop of 6♠ 3♠ J♦, Mark goes all in for 1250 chips.
Emma calls, showing 8♠ 8♥ to Marks 7♥ J♣ (odds were approx 87% to 13% in Marks favour)
Turn & River comes 7♣ A♥, with Mark doubling up
A little later a big swing in chips occurred, with Mark ALL IN, and his K10 holding up against Emmas K9
22:25
Make now big chip lead called Emmas preflop ALL IN.
Mark shows 7♣ 5♣ versus Emmas 2♥ 8♣ (odds were approx 52% to 48% in Emmas favour)
The flop is 7♠ 4♦ 5♦ 9♠ 2♣
Mark is victorious, winning with 2 pair, and picking up his first win of the season.
Here's a blurry picture of the winner (however, this probably reflects Marks vision at the time of winning!)
I think almost all the quotes from last week came out, with a few extras
Mark "you're clapping anything these days!"
Emma "My chips are like Marks penis thing but bigger" _________________ "Look into my eyes, look into my eyes..." |

February 12th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
4 players, £8 pool
1st Richard £8
2nd Chris
3rd Anton
4th Emma
After a fair few weeks of squeezing in around the table everyone seemed to be busy doing things that weren’t poker last Sunday, leaving a small but perfectly formed group of 4 to carry the baton. Anton, Richard, Emma and Chris (in order of appearance) kicked off the proceedings at approximately 7:30pm, having established that none of the other poker regulars were going to be persuaded to join us.
The first interesting poker-related thing I have noted is that Anton played Emma like a violin with his p-p-p-p-p-p-p-poker face, checking all the way, teasing with a couple of late bets, then revealing pocket 6s and winning with a full house. I don’t remember the exact details or what I had. Anton told me lots of times over the course of the evening that I should have written it down...
Chris played with his chips for a very long time deciding whether to go all in on a flop of Q 10 7, turn 3, 5 on the river (against Richard). After much deliberation, Chris managed to scare Richard off with his big stack and took the hand with a pair of 10s.
We had a flop of A A 5, which Anton said I should write down and also take a photo of, so I did. Here it is:
Chris bet 200, Anton folded. Both had K 10 and I had already folded Q 9. This made people chuckle but, really, wasn’t very interesting. There was some suggestion of working out the odds for it but nobody did.
Anton went all in with Q 9 A on the flop and Richard Yellow-streak ran away crying like a girl because he didn’t want to get his elbows broken. (I think that last bit was dictated by Anton).
Emma, now at a serious chip deficit, did an Anton and went all in blind. This worked once (unfortunately I was so excited by this fact I forgot to write the details down) but the second attempt proved to be less lucky. After a flop of Q 4 Q and 5 on the turn, Chris and Emma both went on their backs with K Q (Chris) and A 6 (Emma). The river was a 3, not that any other card would have changed the outcome, and Emma was out.
At 9:43 Anton went all in. Chris and Richard folded.
Shortly after, Richard went all in. Anton folded.
Some things happened which I wrote down but now don’t really understand. They might not have been about poker anyway.
Richard went all in with Q 8 on a flop of Q 8 9. Chris called with Q 6. 4 on the turn maintained Richard’s lead, an 8 on the river sealed the deal and Richard won the hand. I have it noted that this hand was very exciting.
The next exciting bit was when Anton went all in with 4 2 before the flop with 465 chips. Chris called with Q 5. A flop of 2 7 K meant Anton was on to a leading start, Chris’ hand failed to improve with a 6 on the turn and 10 on the river and Anton took the hand with his pair of 2s!
It was Chris’ turn to go all in next with 430 chips, having just given over half his stack away to Anton. I think the next sentence says ‘Richard and Anton are pussies’ so I’m guessing they both folded.
At 10:20 Anton went all in with 630 chips and it was Chris’ turn to run away.
Anton went all in again shortly after with A 8. Richard called with 10 3. A flop of K Q 10 and turn of 9 meant Richard was in the lead but an Ace on the river gave the victory to its rightful owner.
At 10:35 Chris went all in with 630 chips and pocket 9s. Richard called with 8 3. Anton had already folded (the notes say ‘many years ago before the dawn of time’). A flop of 8 7 4 meant Chris kept the lead. An Ace on the turn and 6 on the river didn’t help Richard, and Chris won the hand.
This hand was definitely interesting: Anton went all in (405 chips) with 10 5. Richard, who had stuck in 400 already as big blind, was confident enough to add an extra 5 to back his K 9. A flop of 10 Q 9 had Anton in the lead but a Jack on the turn gave Richard an unbeatable straight and Anton was out.
(At this point I ran out of white paper so tried to write around the edges of a printed sheet of type and it all gets a bit confusing.)
At 10:45 Chris went all in before the flop and Richard folded.
The next thing I can read that makes any sense is that there had yet to be a flop heads up and someone (Anton?) had taken the executive decision that if there wasn’t a winner very soon then the game was going to time out.
No doubt spurred on by this, the boys let the flop come on the next hand – K 7 4. Chris went all in (1260) with 5 7 and Richard called what he could (1140) with K 10. A Jack on the turn and 9 on the river meant Chris failed to improve and was out. Writing this, I realise Chris still should have had 120 chips left but I think we’d all had quite enough excitement for one evening by then and I have written, in capital letters, and underlined:
RICHARD IS A WINNER!!
Congratulations to Richard. Or, to use his new poker name, Cunt.
Other items which were deemed noteworthy by one, some or all of us:
- Not many people turned up.
- Anton made me do the notes.
- Richard was in a slightly annoying mood.
- Chris arrived with messy hair.
- Richard is a pot thief.
- Anton said ‘floptastic’ when QKJ came down in the flop, followed by another J on the turn.
- Richard is a cunt.
- Richard’s poker name is now ‘Cunt’
- Anton’s poker name is now ‘Bean’ for ‘Keen Bean’ (NB: I have decided this is a rubbish poker name and you’ll need to be called something else but I’ll leave the note in for completeness)
- Anton doesn’t like Richard’s music.
- Chris played with his chips for a very long time.
- Richard wouldn’t let me see his cards.
- Anton is a cunt.
- Richard said he was only going to give me one. But then didn’t.
- Richard is being a spastic.
EMMA (to Richard): Stop being a spastic.
RICHARD: Am I stealing your thunder?
- Emma’s poker name is now ‘Spastic’.
- Anton did give me one but it wasn’t enough.
EMMA (to Anton): When you said it might just be me and you, I thought ‘ooh good, that’ll be a quick one’.
EMMA: I’m getting much better at shuffling since I’ve started playing poker.
RICHARD: You are better at shuffling. Shame you’re not any better at poker. |

February 26th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
4 players, £8 pool
1st Ellis £8
2nd Louise W
3rd Emma
4th Gavin
Relatively short-handed game, as expected - given the commitments of 3 regulars with Dealer's choice. We had a blind and mute Richard for a while, until he gave up his chips at about 7.55 (some did comment upon how this was a much less annoying Richard than usual...)
The game began fairly quietly and there was, around 7.45, some comment upon there had been no real pre-flop raising. Emma said she was definitely going to do some once she got her "Game Face" on.
And lo and behold, she did so in the next hand - raising by 75... to a waterfall fold from all the other players. This was as exciting as it had got up until this point...
Emma went in again with a pre-flop raise of 75 next hand. This time two people called her but I can't remember what happened and it probably wasn't worth remembering because I didn't write it down...
The next vaguely exciting hand was at 8.10, with Ellis calling a raise by Gavin - board showing: 7S 8S 5S/ 7D/ 6C. She commented that she thought he was beating her but was pot committed.... Turns out she was beating him, with her two pair of 8s and 7s beating his 6s and 7s...
At 8.20 we had our first All In, with Louise betting an all in of 365, on a flop of 5d 6d 3s. Both Gavin and Emma folded to this bold standpoint, from a not-so-bad-when-you-look-at-it-relatively short stacked Louise.
Emma was the next to make an all in bet with 775 against Ellis, with the board showing 6s, 7s, Jd and (turn) 9s. Ellis folds.
8.30
Following a bit of post-flop and post-turn betting, Em put Lou all in, by betting 300 with a board showing 3s kc 4c 8h (turn) and 8c (river). But Louise wasn't taking the bait.
But then by the next hand, at 8.35, Louise had put herself all in anyway and Gavin called. Louise had Ac 2c and Gavin JJ (I'm sure someone else can comment on the stats)..
Flop: Kc 8h 3s
So Gavin's Jacks were holding...
Turn: Ad - Louise was ahead!
River: 3c
Louise doubles up
8.40: Gavin all in pre-flop with 2s Ac and Emma calls with Kh and 8c
Flop: 10h 6c 4c
Turn: 8d
River: 2d (no help to Gavin). Gavin's out. And deals for us for the rest of the game thanks Gavin!
Then, at 8.50, we had an exciting moment when Emma calls Louise's (420) all in, following an 8s, As, Js, 9c board (after a bit of pre-turn betting).
There was talk from both girls about "needing a cheat sheet" and "I'm not sure I've got the hands in the right order" but they both committed their chips and..
Emma reveals a 7d, 10d, giving her a straight
Louise turns over Ks and 3s to give her the flush.
"Which wins?" Um sadly for Emma, the flush - she was now drawing dead (Jc was the river if anyone cares) and hopefully will, now forever remember FLUSH BEATS STRAIGHT!! Somehow I feel it will be less of a lesson to Louise than Emma on this occasion...
Suddenly Louise was looking a lot more healthy than she had been...
8.55 Ellis tries to put Emma all in. Emma, sensibly folds, with Ellis showing her A-A ("WHY WILL NO-ONE PLAY WITH ME!!!")
Just before the break Emma goes all in with 350 (on board showing Kc-Qh-6c) but Louise, the only player still in, folds...
After the (late) break we had an almost immediate all in at 9.20 with Ellis calling Emma... Emma had Qh 5h to Ellis' Ac 10c. The flop turned up 9h, 7d, 6s. The turn threw a 10d into the mix - making Ellis a pair but making a split pot a possibility... but a reality it was, with 8c hitting the river. It was all incredibly exciting (Emma said she'd never been so excited just to get her money back before!)
At 9.25 - the very next hand - Emma was all in again with 550 total. Ellis called and revealed a Ah-3h to Emma's 8d-5d.
Flop: 10h Ad Ks
Turn: 7h
River didn't bring Emma a reprieve, with 10d, and she was the second casualty of the evening.
Louise and Ellis were then heads up - Emma took over the writing, and it's suddenly a lot clearer from hereon in...
At 9.30 Louise goes all in blind (with 260) and Ellis calls with a pair of 6s. Louise turns her blind cards over to reveal a Q-Q!
They hold, through an 8d 7d 2d flop, a 5c turn and a As river...
However, two hands later (at 9.33), Louise is all in blind again - this time with 320. Ellis calls again - this time with Ac 8h, Louise having 7d 9d.
The flop came down with 2d 7h 3c (giving Lou the pair), Qc on the turn and 8c on the river (giving Ellis the marginally better pair).
As Emma put it: Catherine WINS!!
Cheers to all who turned up. |

March 4th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
4 players, £8 pool
1st Ellis £8
2nd Marcus
3rd Gavin
4th Christian
Well the pre-match socialising got off to a shaky start this week, when we turned up to find no-one on the Bar... However, determined not to let that deter us, we sent Gavin out to the shop and put in an emergency call to Christian, who brought his own beer. By 7.30 we were happily stocked up and ready to start.
Things chugged along fairly slowly to start with - everyone playing a fairly safe game. The first relatively sizeable pot came along at 8.10, when a fairly pot-committed Ellis called Marcus' 500 bet on a board showing 8c-8h-10c-Jc-3h. Commenting that she thought he had the flush but needed to see, she showed 7c and 9d for the straight. Marcus showed his Jh and something else not interesting enough to write down (or remember) for distinctly not the flush and Ellis obtained a decent chip lead.
By this time Christian was getting a bit short stacked and on the next hand folded to a 200 bet from Marcus with a board showing 9h-7s-10c-7h.
By 8.35 Christian was forced to go all in pre-flop with 360. Both Gavin and Marcus called and then proceeded to check through a flop of 3d-9c-4s, a turn of 5h and a river of 6h. When the cards are turned over Christian was the unlucky first casualty, showing Ks-10s to Gavin's Kd-Jd and Marcus' winning Ad-10d.
Gavin was the next to go all in - but his teeny stack of 90 meant Marcus got a 10 chip refund on his blind. Luck was behind Gavin, however, whose Ac 7d paired with an Ace on the board - beating off Marcus who flashed a K-5.
Nonetheless, on the next hand Gavin was all in again - and again called by Marcus. This time he wasn't so lucky - his marginally better starting hand of Ac-Qd against Marcus' As-Jc was no use when Kc-Js-Jd-Ad gave Marcus the full house and rendered him drawing dead for the river (I didn't even bother to write down what the card was!).
That was at 8.42. And left Ellis and Marcus heads up. Ever the considerate couple they wrapped it up nice and quickly - Marcus going all in at 8.49 with a board showing Ac-6c-Ks-As-9h. Ellis called and Marcus triumphantly showed his Ah-5c, for the triple Aces... only to be beaten off by Ellis, with her pocket pair of 9-9 giving her the full-house.
So we even had time for a second game. But, as everyone knows, we don't talk about who won that. No-one ever really wins that. It never really happens...
Cheers to everyone who came down. |

March 18th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
5 players (including a prawn sandwich), £10 pool
1st - Ellis £10
2nd - Mark
3rd - Richard/Prawn sandwich
4th - Marcus
5th - Dave
Game started a little late and fairly slowly - with a prawn sandwich playing in Richard's place. Much comment ensuing about Richard being a slack cunt for never dealing (or at least the prawn sandwich being rubbish at it in his place).
8.05 was the first decent sized pot. Marcus and Mark betting sizeable amounts at each juncture. 2s, 5s, 4c flop - 4h (turn), As (river)
Mark bet 250 on the river (with a pot of around 600 already).
Marcus calls and Mark shows A-A. Marcus quietly puts his cards face down into the deck.
Nothing very exciting then happened until 8.20, when some substitutions are made – the most notable being the Prawn sandwich taken off the pitch and sub'd by Richard.
At the same time, Dave and Mark do a bit of big pre-flop raising. The flop shows
Jh Qc 5c
Dave bets 150 and Mark calls
10c is the turn card, prompting Dave to go all in. Mark calls and Dave shows a pair of Jacks (spades and clubs). Mark has Ac 6c for the nut flush (2c comes down on river, giving Dave a flush but not quite a good enough one and Mark beats him off)
So Dave was the first casualty - but at least he wasn’t beaten by a prawn sandwich.
By 8.25 – Mark is becoming increasingly aggressive and eats the prawn sandwich. Poor prawn sandwich - he really didn't have great game. Although many of us comment that he was a much less irritating player than Richard.
9pm Richard goes all in with 670 and Marcus calls. They turn over:
Ad 9c Marcus
Ah 3s – Richard
The flop shows
3h 4s kc, giving Richard a little pair.
8c on the turn adds nothing of interest.
Nor does 5d on the river and Richard doubles
By 9.05 Ellis was looking pretty unhealthy and makes an all in move pre-flop, to which everyone folds.
Next hand everything got a little bit crazy... Marcus goes all in with 330 and Richard calls. Mark is next up and goes all in - being the big chip lead he has everyone covered but then Ellis also goes all in with 620. Richard does the seemingly sensible thing and folds (given that it would have taken a further 620 to call Ellis and then another 1375 to call Mark).
So with three players in...
Marcus shows As 5something
Mark has - Ks Jd
And Ellis has pocket pair of Aces...
How incredibly exciting.
The flop gives Mark a bit of hope, with 10s 10c Kh
The turn of 9h and river of 2s add nothing. Marcus goes out and Ellis pretty much trebles up.
As if that wasn't interesting enough, it transpired that Richard had folded K-10... "Lol"
After all that excitement we broke for a Chinese.
The first hand back after the break saw everyone folding. But it wasn't to be that dull for long. In the very next hand (9.35) Richard goes all in with 860 and Ellis (now looking pretty strong with a couple of purple ones) calls.
Both are fairly evenly matched (according to Statsman Mark), with Richard showing Kd Qs and Ellis showing As 5d. However, the Ace holds, through a table of 6h 7s Jc, Jd and 6c and Richard becomes the third casualty of the evening, leaving Markie and Ellis heads up.
Mark begins to chip away (arf arf) at Ellis' large stack... At 9.45 he goes all in with 775 and gets called. His Jc 6c do well against Ellis' 10s Jh when a 6d hits the flop. A further 6 on the turn gives him trips and Ellis is drawing dead. Mark doubles up.
Mark then proceeds to go all in 2-3 more times with Ellis folding each time. With the blinds pretty high by now he becomes the chip lead so that when Ellis goes all in at 10pm with 2250 he has her covered when he calls. Which is lucky for him...
Her 7s-7h is a statistical 50:50 (according to Mark) against his Ad 10s. However, neither of his cards hit on a table showing 2c 8c 6c, 2d, Jh.
Ellis doubles up and Mark is left with 500.
So... on the next hand he goes all in blind. And, being big blind with 400 in, Ellis does the decent thing (after persuasion from the rest of the table) and calls him blind.
Ellis shows a pair of 7s again (spades and diamonds this time).. Mark also has a 7 (hearts) and 10d. But Ellis' lovely pair holds out, through some good flop of 4c-4h-As, turn of Qc and a river 8s.
So Ellis wins again... making a hat trick
Thanks to all who came down. |

May 6th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
6 players, £12 pool
1st - Jason £10
2nd - Richard £2
3rd - Anton
4th - Matthew
5th - Ellis
6th - Emma
Well, it's been a while and it was great to see 6 players sit down at the table, albeit sometimes a little hungover/drunk.
Our first official game for a while started with a little discussion of when the clock should start and how much the opening blinds should be. In case anyone is uncertain of the house rules which we have discussed, honed and agreed over the course of five years play, they can be found here.
http://www.pokerqueens.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=104
Any discussion of the continued appropriateness of these rules would be welcomed here.
Action began a little after 7.15 on some blind level or another until...
8.03 K, 2, 2 flop Emma went all in with Q,Q, Jason called and showed K, Q. Emma failed to improve and went out.
A little later Catherine went all in pre-flop with Q, J and Anton called with pocket nines. The board came 7, 8, K, 7, 5. Anton's pocket pair held up and Catherine's winning streak ended.
8.42 - Nothing happened. Emma wrote this.
8.43 Matthew all in with 320 chips and Richard calls. Matthew shows pocket rockets to Richard's A, 2. Despite a 2 on the flop and various straight posibilities Matthew's aces hold up and win (board 3, 2, 5, 3, .
The next action came after a flop of 3, Q, 4 when Jason went all in and was called by Matthew. Jason showed 3, 3 and Matthew A, 3. Jason's trips hold up to knock Matthew out.
Next to go all in was Anton who was quickly called by Richard. Richard's A, 3 suited held up and knocked out Anton's K, 8 suited (board 2, 10, 2, Q, 6).
This left us with Jason and Richard heads-up. Richard soon went all in pre-flop and showed K, 9 when called by Jason with A, Q! A board of A, 6, 5, K, J was no help to Richard and Jason scored another well-deserved win.
Well done to everyone who played and I hope to see you all (and more) on Sunday.

The pokerqueens blind structure is programmed into our poker clock.
If people don't know how to turn it on, then i'll happily give a demonstration, though it only really involved holding down one button when turning it on.
Arguments for using it?
No need to question what the blinds are.
No need to question how much longer we have on a blind level.
The clock can be used to time slow decisions
It cost £50 and i'd like to get some use out of it.
Arguments against using it?
It appears complicated to setup
The buzzer is a bit noisy
It's a bit fragile and can switch off if moved during a game. _________________ "Look into my eyes, look into my eyes..." |

I would be very much in favour of using the blind clock. It takes a lot of effort and guess work out of the management of the game and allows players to relax and play poker.
I have never been able to get it to work, however so would welcome a demo.

"house rules which we have discussed, honed and agreed over the course of five years play"
... Do remind me when these were discussed and honed and any amendments were agreed? I must have been away that week. On each occasion...
But... anyway, my point about blinds going up at 9pm is dealt with by Rule 6:
"6. The blind levels shall increase every twenty minutes, and after an agreed time (such as 9pm) this should be cut to 15 minutes. "
Which does seem to say that blinds will be reduced to 15 minutes after a period of time regardless of the number of players (which was always my recollection). What that period of time is, appears to be negotiable - although we did always used to do it at 9pm. |

Did you read the thread? I see a good deal of discussion and amendment.

True, but the reason for this was to ensure that the game finished in a reasonable time, which was crucial in games with 10-12 players. Not finishing is never an issue with our puny games of 4-6 players so I would suggest that there is possibly no need to change the timings and we should let the remaining players continue at the 20 minute level. Obviously others may disagree and if faster blinds are what people want then so be it.
This is why I have invited discussion about these rules. Some of them may not be appropriate anymore (including starting the clock at 7.00). Hone away! |

May 13th 2012
Sunday Evening SLT £2 freezeout
5 players, £10 pool
1st Chris
2nd Anton
3rd Richard
4th Matthew
5th Emma
With only Anton, Matthew and Chris at the table for 7pm, we decided to blind in another three places for any late shows.
This was a good idea because Chaz almost, ALMOST joined in. He was so close to playing, but ah, the discipline of the man succeeded and he delayed joining the poker queens till next week.
It nearly all kicked off in the first hand, with Chris taking on Anton head to head. We got all the way to the river, and both players had bet big (about 1200 in the pot). Unfortunately Chris last bet wasn't big enough to scare away Anton, who called with his AJ (two pair) beating Chris 99.
Emma joined in after about 40 mins of so, and the most noteworthy hand that popped up was against Anton, where both players had A8 and split the pot.
Richard joined us after about 1hr, and after a few aggressive hands, put Emma out of the game:
On a flop of 5♥ 3♥ 10♠ Emma was all in for 470, which Richard called.
Emma shows K♥ Q♦ against Richards A♠ 5♣
The turn 6♥ and river A♣ gave Richard two pairs, and a nice chip stack.
Thanks Emma for dealing the rest of the game for us.
Matthew was bleeding away his chips and needed to make a move soon, which he did going all in for 260 which Anton called.
Matthew shows A♦ 5♦ against Antons 7♥ Q♥
The flop is 9♥ 5♥ J♣ K♠ K♦
Matt doubles up with two pair.
With the blinds getting quite hefty, that double up wasn't enough to make Matt comfortable, and soon again had to make a move going all in for 370, which was called by Chris.
Matt shows K♥ 9♦ vs Chris A♥ Q♣
The flop - A♠ 2♣ 3♣ 8♦ 9C, giving Chris a high pair which was enough to knock Matthew out.
Despite taking an early chip lead, Anton has lost of few hands along the way, and was forced to go all in for 335 against Richard.
Anton shows A♣ 4♦ versus Richards 5♣ 3♦
I didn't note the flop, but nothing weird happened, and Antons better hand held up for a nice double up.
After a preflop raise of 700 by Chris was called by Richard, the flop came A♣ 9♥ Q♥. Richard put Chris all in for 1000, and after a wee thing, called.
Chris shows A♥ K♠ vs Richards A♦ 10♠
The remaining two cards J♣ 5♣ were no help to Richard and gave Chris a hefty double up, putting him in a comfortable chip lead.
A few hands later, Chris put Richard all in for 470, which Richard called.
Chris shows Q♠ Q♥ vs Richards 6♠ 7♥
the flop of 3♣ Q♦ 2♥ 2♠ A♣ gave Chris a pretty Full House, and knocked Richard out.
Interestingly enough, as Chris was the Big Blind when Richard was knocked out, we evoked the new rule of 'you can't be Big blind twice' (see the rulings thread). Admittedly, we were still a little shaky on what to do, but it essentially meant the dealer button moved two places. I think this worked out ok.
Chris was a pretty dominant chip stack by now, but still had to play carefully and not allow Anton to double up.
The end came when Chris allowed a flop of J♦ 5d 8♣
Anton (holding j♣ 2♥) went all in
Chris was holding 9♣ 7♥, giving him a double belly buster straight draw (needing a 6 or a 10). I wasn't really sure what the correct move here was, but called anyway to see what happened:
(interestingly, the odds at this point were approx 66% to 34% in Anton favour)
The remaining 2 cards came A♠ 6♠, giving Chris the straight for the win.
Quite a nice game I think. _________________ "Look into my eyes, look into my eyes..." |

May 20th 2012
Sunday Evening SLT £2 freezeout
8 players, £16 pool (eventually)
1st Anton £12
2nd Jason £4
3rd Matthew
4th John
5th Bob
6th Catherine
7th Cherize
8th Gavin
Our biggest game for a while was augmented by two players from the R&G cast - welcome to John and Cherize. Six players sat down to start the game in a very busy and buzzy bar, with Matthew and Catherine joining us shortly afterwards from an audition.
Cherize professed to not really know how to play but if that was the case she picked things up very quickly and the early play was dominated by her and Bob who, by his own admission, had sampled quite a lot of liquid refreshment that afternoon. These two loose cannons won several large early pots and caused the regulars to have to adjust their games and become much more cautious. As play settled down the chip stacks gradually evened out again and there was little action until...
At 8.34 Gavin went all in with a very low stack and was called by both John and Catherine forming a potential side pot and further betting. After a flop of 5♠ Q♥ 2♣ Catherine put in a bet of 100 and John folded. Gavin showed J, 6 and Catherine showed K, 9 but a 6 turned up on the river to double Gavin up.
At 8.44 Jason went all in with 740 in chips and was called by both Cherize and Gavin who could not cover the bet, putting three players all in! Jason showed A, Q, Gavin A, J and Cherize A, 10. Jason's hand held up and Cherize and Gavin were both out with Cherize taking the higher position by dint of having slightly more chips than Gavin going into the hand.
A short while later (still before the break) Anton went all in after a flop of 3♦ 8♦ 6♦ and Cat called with pocket 3s. Her trips were dwarfed by Anton's flush however when he showed J♦ 10♦. The turn and river then came down A♦ K♦ and and for a moment it was thought to be a split pot but newcomer John pointed out that Catherine was playing the board but Anton's jack and ten played, giving him a higher flush. Catherine out.
Shortly after the break at 9.20 Anton went all in after an A, 2, 5 flop and was called by Bob for all his chips. Bob showed A, 3 but Anton's 3, 4 suited showed that he had flopped a straight. The turn and river were no help to Bob and he was out.
At 9.26 John went all in with 420 chips and was called by Jason who showed 2♥ 10♥ to John's 4♣ 9♣. The board was no help to John with Jason hitting a 10 on the river knocking his opponent out.
At 9.34 Matthew went all in pre-flop and was called by big-stacked Anton. He looked in good shape when he showed A 6 to Anton's Q 6 but the poker gods were not smiling on him and a queen on the flop sent him packing. Puny gods!
This left Anton and Jason heads up with Anton holding about 80% of the chips. Jason played a bold game, going all in frequently and causing Anton to back down but he had to hit a hand sometime and having made the decision to call with any ace or any pair an A, 4 came along and he called Jason's all in bet. Jason showed J, 3, the board came 8, 2, 8, 8, 5 and Anton's ace played and won the final hand.
Well done to all who played and I hope to see you all next week. With some regulars returning might we have to play two tables like in the old days?

Poker Sunday 17 June 2012
Delayed 19:15 start with 9 players
£2 Freezeout
Winner £14 Second £4
Ellis was the latest of the late players, joining the game at 19:30
No winner (Tee Hee)
22:34 Catherine 2nd= £9
22:34 Jon 2nd= £9
22:30 Matthew 3rd
21:36 Anton 4th
21:35 Mark 5th
21:26 Jason 6th
20:45 Daniel 7th
19:48 Pete 8th
19:45 Chaz 9th
Match Report written during the game. The 80s CDs played throughout. Many music lyrics and titles also recorded in the match report when they were heard. I did not share this with the players.
Everything written is true.
Food involved - Fish and chips, Fried Rice, half a popadom.
In early skirmishes, Jon seemed to be having the best of it.
19:36 Big pot - Jon Mark Chaz
Mark was scared off then Jon scooped a massive pot with a ten in his hand and one on the board. Good enough to beat lots of large bets apparently. Play is as loose as a goose after a bad salmon mousse.
After that Chaz was all in with nothing great and Ellis took him out.
19:48 Anton put Pete all in. Pete's 77 was not enough. Pete out.
Who's next to go craaazy?
19:54 Matthew threw coke on the table.
20:04 With A-Ha's 'Take On Me' playing in the background, Ellis raised a nervous Mark out of a big pot. Morten's shrill voice seems to shriek with laughter at the outcome.
Next up "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Betting not relaxed though, and as Holly Johnson comes in our ears, Matthew wins a big pot with, ironically, a "straight" made "on the flop".
Matthew beat Jason with some uncommitted bets from both players to the tune of "Stand and Deliver". He was Adamant he had the best hand.
20:29 Mark back from the brink drawing a K and a J to break Jon's Aces. Thanks to Jon's all-in, Mark also scooped a fair few of Ellis's chips as she folded to Jon.
"We Close Our Eyes" was playing by Go West (apparently). With two eights on the board, Anton said "It's eight-ier than the music". Very apt comment given the (as yet unknown to him) match report theme.
20:38 "Don't Leave me this Way...."
Daniel did. All-in with QJ but Matthew had AQ. Daniel out.
Mark immediately couldn't remember who had gone out. "Do you remember me?" sang Sister Sledge.
"Angel is a Centre Fold" plays. 'Nuff said.
Matthew only seems to get cards with pretty pictures on. Or ones that match. Or both. He shows KK, Jason having, sensibly as it turns out, folded to Matthew's raise.
21:01 Ellis all-in with flop KJ9. I now realise I didn't write anything else down about this.
21:07 Jason, in some desperation by now, sees a Q6 of hearts and goes all-in. Jon calls with a mighty AJ of clubs. Jason puts his head in his hands and starts cursing his luck as Jon gets a J on the flop but a third heart on the turn gave Jason a streaky flush win to keep six players alive at the break.
No food purchased during the break.
**Update from Matthew**
Jason
I must point out a massive factual error in your report!
I did in fact purchase roast duck with bean sprouts and noodles in a box (£4.30 from New Village, 4 Norwood High Street, SE27 9NT) during the break last night. I think your readers should be told the truth.
**End of update from Matthew**
"Wishing I Was Lucky" plays as Jason goes all-in with J10 seeing a 10 on the flop. Catherine calls with KJ and top pair. Jason out. Sad face.
"Everybody Wants To Rule the World" plays. But Jon finally beats the unbeatable Matthew with 44 and getting another 4 on the flop.
"Wouldn't It Be Good To Be In Your Shoes?" as Mark's all-in KJ was beaten by a Q helping Ellis's KQ.
Daniel dealing like Les Dawson playing the piano, but he seems to be giving Ellis a succession of good, playable hands and Matthew's luck finally dries up.
Jon goes all in. "If You Don't Know Me By Now" plays. Ellis AQ. Jon Q10. But the poker Gods smile on Jon and give him a straight.
It's 22:10 and I'm a bit bored because three players have been trading blows for 45 mins without much change overall. But now Ellis seems finally to be taking a hold on the game. Oh, maybe not.
22:27 Finally a big three way. Jon now leading.
No music playing sadly. We discussed the very dull movie snoreathon "The Artist".
22:30 Finally Matthew goes out just as the bell goes because the bar is now shut. Ellis gets loads of 8s on the board to win.
22:34 Mark suddenly pops back to suggest that the game could be finished on a handshake and all of a sudden Jon and Catherine agree to split the money and call it a day.
Oh well. A little like "The Artist" - a bit of a damp squib. (Actually, this is, of course, a little harsh. To have six players still in at the break, and three players still in at 22:30 suggests a good game was played by many.)
Music suddenly back on. "Tainted Love". Brilliant.
Well played all. Aspall's anyone?
