The Poker Queens 2011/12 season kicked off last night with a spectacular pair of games which really got the old enthusiasm bubbling, the old jokes tumbling out (Matthew to 'act') and we managed to get through a whole night without anyone saying 'What do I have to do to carry on'!

Although we were only three handed and none of us had played for a while we managed to make each game last about an hour and a half. Mark made an early exit from the first game and was kind enough to deal for an hour of scintillating heads-up play between Matthew and Anton. Things started off pretty even but when Anton's pocket rockets hit the flop with another ace he managed to not shout 'woo hoo' but in fact keep Matthew in the hand right up to the river and take most of his stack. Matthew never quite recovered from this setback and despite hanging on in true limpety fashion for a fair while he eventually bled all of his chips away and Anton took first place in the leader board.

The tables were turned in the second game as Anton, unable to adjust to the now low blind levels, made some outrageously bad bluffs for too many chips and it was his turn to take an early bath. Matthew had won most of Anton's chips and attempted to bully Mark for a while but the chips started to go Mark's way and things evened up a little. Gradually however Matthew wrested back the advantage and in a final all-in hand Mark's pocket fours were no match for Matthew's pocket fives which held up and took the game.

Let's hope that next week we can rustle up some more players and get ourselves a full table. Remember to be there by 7.00 if you wish to play or inform one of us that you would like to be blinded in.

See you soon

October 30th
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
6 players, £12 pool

1st Anton £8
2nd Matthew £4
3rd Mark
4th Chris
5th Paul
6th Jack

Week two of the newly rejuvenated SLT Poker School proved to be one of thrills, spills and journeys back from the brink of disaster. We started with six players this week, a big improvement on week one which bodes well for the future. Anton, Matthew and Mark were joined by Chris Learmonth and debutante Paul Dineen as well as Jack King who happened to be in the bar and was persuaded to join us (albeit briefly).

The game started with high rollers Jack and Mark pushing all their chips in on hand two. Mark's Ace-high straight crushed Jack's King-high straight and we lost a player in the first 10 minutes. This probably contributed to the table tightening up considerably and an hour passed before Paul, who had been playing solid cards went out in a similarly unlucky fashion as his flush was beaten by Matthew's nut flush.

Anton, in this period, had been passing most hands and bleeding away chips so made the uncharacteristically rash decision to go all in without looking at his cards. Chris called and turned over pocket 9s and Anton looked dead when he showed 5, 2. A two on the flop and another on the river however brought Anton back from the brink. Chris came back a few hands later when his JQ made a straight against Anton’s A5.

This put Anton almost out of the game again and he went all in with less than the big blind. Chris called again with KJ and the table was shocked to see Anton’s 2, 5 win when he made a straight on the river!

Chris and Matthew then went head to head and Matthew’s A4 held up to against Chris’ K, 10 and Chris was out. Mark went out next as his 5, 9 failed to improve against Matthew’s K, 7 and Anton found himself in the final having been all in with rags 5 times.

This correspondent is now too embarrassed to say how many times he got lucky in the ensuing play but he did manage to have cards when it mattered, calling Matthew’s all in bet with AK to take the game.
Some may say that it was a lucky, nay hollow victory but they would be wrong. And losers.

Join us next week for another thrill packed evening of Texas hold’em from 7.00 onwards.

November 13th
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
4 players, £8 pool

1st Chris £8
2nd Matthew
3rd Anton
4th Jack

A short handed game this week, with Mark upstairs taking photos and a few other regulars still involved in Wedding Story. Matthew, Anton, Chris and Jack sat down with the promise of £8 for the winner. Jack went out first when his Jack-Seven was dominated by Matthew's Jack-Nine and Matthew added insult to injury by flopping a straight.

Next to go was Anton Whose Jack-Ten was likewise dominated by Matthew's Ace-Nine and Matthew flopped another Ace-Nine! The word that is written in my notebook after this hand ends with 'unt'. Still it makes up for last week's 'jam-fest' I suppose.

This left Matthew and Chris heads up. One early all-in moment had Matthew showing Ace-Jack which held up against Chris' QJ but then Matthew soon went out when he failed to make his gutshot to beat Chris' pair of tens.

Chris pocketted the winner takes all prize and genrously bought a round with it. We are hoping for some returning players next week and a higher prize pool so see you all at the green baize on Sunday!

November 20th
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
4 players, £8 pool

1st Chris £8
2nd Matthew
3rd Mark
4th Anton

Another short handed game this week despite the 'influx' of Wedding Storiers... We blinded Dave in the hope of making 5 players but when he arrived his Chinese take-away held more allure than an exciting evening at the baize so we took his chips off the table at 8.50. This game did, however produce the most exciting and see-sawry heads up encounters that we have ever seen in the bar.

The first moment of excitement occured when Matthew lost a big hand to Chris, thinking that his trip 10s were beaten by Chris' straight on a 9, 10, 10 flop. Only after the cards had been mucked did he notice that as he had 9, 10 he actually had a full house and should have won the hand! Unfortunately mistakes cannot be rectified after etc. etc.

Anton was out first (unless you count Dave) when he failed to put Chris on a hand after raising before the flop with A, 6 and seeing a 2, 4, 5 flop. Chris' pocket 3, 4 eventually made two pair and Anton was out.

Mark was next to go all in with 8, 2 and failing to get lucky against Chris' 8, 10.

As mentioned the heads up competition was a roller coaster of ups and downs, slings and arrows, flotsam and jetsam etc and I actually wrote down the results of 9 thrilling hands. But I can't be bothered typing them because nobody is reading this so suffice to say that Chris won the final hand, all in with A, 10 against Matthew's K, 7 and hitting an ace on the flop.

Same time this sunday.

A

I've been trying to find a definitave answer on a problem that came up in the October 30th game, where down to head to head Matthew had to post big blind twice in a row:

Down to 3 players

Player 1 - Dealer
Player 2 - Small Blind
Player 3 - Big Blind.

Player 1 busted out, so we moved into heads up, with the dealer button moving one place. However, in heads up, dealer is also small blind.
This essentiall meant that the Big Blind posted twice in a row!

so this is what we did:

Player 1 - out
Player 2 - Dealer & Small Blind
Player 3 - Big Blind (again)

next hand

Player 1 - out
Player 2 - Big Blind
Player 3 - Dealer & Small Blind

This didn't really feel correct, but I didn't know what the right thing to do in this situation.

I've had a wee look around for the correct way to do things, and come up with this on www.learn-texas-holdem.com

Player 1 - Dealer
Player 2 - Small Blind
Player 3 - Big Blind.

Player 1 - out
Player 2 - Dealer & Big Blind
Player 3 - Small Blind

next hand

Player 1 - out
Player 2 - Dealer & Small Blind
Player 3 - Big Blind

This is their explaination:
"The most important thing is that in heads up play a player doesn't get stuck with the big blind twice in a row. Notice that in each hand, the big blind is moved. Secondly, we want to get back to having the dealer button on the small blind as quick as possible without breaking any more important rule. The best way to do this is to put the big blind on the dealer button for one hand, then it remains in that seat for the next hand."

What do we think?

November 27th
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
6 players, £12 pool

1st Richard £9
2nd Mark £3
3rd Anton
4th Jack
5th Matthew
6th Chris

A mammoth 6 players this week and possibly the most interesting game so far this season, with returning player Richard Nield adding a little spice to the occasion and keeping us all on our toes. The early play was full of swings and excitement and although there was plenty of action and many multi-player pots the chips kept going back and forth with no real winners and losers emerging. After two hours of this however the blinds were getting to the stage where they were hurting everybody and play began to change.

Chris was the first all-in and his Q, 4 of clubs held up against Richard's 10, 6 when he hit a flush and came back from the brink. His stack was dwindling however and you could tell that he was looking for a hand strong enough to double up with. It was not forthcoming however and he had to go all in with 7, 9 of clubs on the big blind and got a call from Mark whose Q, 5 hit two pair and won the day. first casualty at 9.20!

The next moment of excitement came when Matthew went all in with A, 10. Richard, on his left, considered his options for what seemed like a week before raising Jack all-in, which Jack decided to call. Richard showed rockets (tough call!) and Jack showed K, 9. A board of Q, A, 2, Q, J gave Richard an Ace-Queen boat and sent both Matthew and Jack out of the game in the same hand.

Three players remained and the chips and fortunes swung wildly as the three of us moved into 'all-in or fold' mode. Anton was out next, foolishly calling with the bottom end of a straight on a low, flushy board. His 2-6 straight was squashed when Richard showed the 7 of hearts to make a straight flush!

Richard had a big chip lead going into heads up with Mark who was all in first hand. He survived that hand but was soon beaten when all-in with 6, 4 against A, 3. A three on the flop added insult to injury and Richard was the winner.

Things are hotting up and it looks like an exciting game on the cards next week (I think I've figured out Richard's game. Bring it on.)

7.00 in the bar or you can be blinded in until 7.45 if you let us know in advance.

See you soon

December 4th
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
5 players, £10 pool

1st Matthew £10
2nd Dave
3rd Richard
4th Anton
5th Chris

Well, what a difference a week makes. Last week we had all players in until the first casualty at 9.20. This week the entire game was over by 9.00!

What was the difference? Big hands going head-to-head. Lots of all-ins being called. Lots of action.

First out was Chris at 7.19 who called Richard's all-in with a straight to Richard's flush. I don't have full details because I didn't have my book ready to take notes at this early stage. Chris kindly dealt for the table as the action continued.

Anton was the next casualty at 8.15. With a hand of 9, 10 and a flop of suited K, Q, J (but not matching the 9,10) he was pretty sure he had the best hand at this stage and went all-in to chase out those drawing to the flush. Matthew did the decent thing and folded but Dave called and turned over Q, J showing two pair. The straight was still winning until a queen on the river gave Dave the full house.

Richard was all-in next on a board of A, 4, 7, J, A and Matthew called. Richard's A, K was beaten by Matthew's A, 7 giving him the full house and leaving Richard with only a few chips. He soon went all in with A, 3 and Dave called with 8, 10 and hit trip 8s.

This left Dave and Matthew heads up. Dave went all-in on a board of 7, K, Q, 4, Q and showed his K, 4, which was unfortunately no match for Matthew's monster Q, 7 boat.

Congratulations to Matthew on his win which came at just after 9.00. We then proceded to have a turbo game with five hundred chips and ten minute blinds for a quid a head. Modesty forbids me to mention the winner of this game but many would consider it the 'official' game of the evening. Well, maybe just me.

This Sunday will be the last game before Christmas as the 18th is a 'Sunday Sessions' evening and the following Sunday is Christmas Day so let's make it a big one. Interestingly, despite many promises, none of the ladies have yet joined us at the table. Perhaps we gentlemen are made of sterner stuff. Unless you know better.

See you at the green baize!

Nice summary Anton,

Just to clarify:
Anton wrote:

I went out as Richards flush was better than my flush (I had a made a straight on the turn and couldn't give it up!)

New strategy - Next week i'm gonna play super tight, and not call any all in before 21:00 - There you go.

Yes, my mistake. As I said, I wasn't ready to write that one down as it took me by surprise and the cards were mucked before I thought about getting my book out.

Also the Poker Blind Clock made a very successful first appearance! It's worth coming down just for that.

December 11th
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
6 players, £12 pool

1st Chris VS £9
2nd Helen £3
3rd Anton
4th Gavin
5th M
6th Richard

Hi all

A host of new players this week blew the cobwebs of complacency from the net curtains of our usual Sunday game and flung the window wide to let in the blinding light of randomness.

Four players joined us for the first time this season, with only Anton and Richard amongst the regulars. Richard was the most unlucky as he phoned to ask to be blinded in and arrived just before the 7.45 cut-off time to discover that his most successful hands were already behind him. Folding his first hand he then went all in on a K, 10, 2 of clubs flop. Chris called and Richard's jack flush was no match for Chris' queen flush and Richard was out.

I do have a note in my book to the effect that M was winning after 3 hands. Also that she was no longer wining after 4 hands. She left us just before the break however when she went all in with 10, 7 with a 10 on the flop. Chris called with a king and hit trip kings. He was starting to build an unassailable lead.

At 9.00 Gavin called Chris' all in with K, 8, Chris showed Q, 9 and a board of A, 6, 9, 5, Q sent Gavin out and gave Chris even more chips.

Anton was out next, all in with A, 8 and called by Helen's A, J. A flop of 8, 9, 10 showed some hope but when an Ace and a Ten came down on the turn and river it gave us both two pair and Helen's Jack played.

This left Helen and Chris heads up and Chris with a large chip advantage. Helen called Chris' all in on a board of 10, 7, Q, 4, 3. Sadly I neglected to note down their pocket cards but Chris won and took the honours in the last game of 2011. This week also led to an impromtu after hours home game during which so many dry martinis were drunk that history does not record the result.

With a short break for Christmas we are considering a game on New Year's day. Please indicate availability.

See you soon

January 1st 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
5 players, £10 pool

1st Richard £10
2nd Anton
3rd Matthew
4th Mark
5th Caroline

Hello all,

The first game of the new year saw five players valiantly shake off their hangovers to put their sluggish wits to the test. Six if you count the ghostly presence of Dave, who was blinded in for the first hour and a half, and at one point seemed to be making an impression on the pint of lager in front of him.

Even excepting the draw of imbibing phantoms, there was no shortage of drama to start off 2012. A tightly-contested game was punctuated by three feverish spells that each saw a succession of stacks pushed into the middle.

The game started calmly enough, the first half-hour or so notable only for Mark trying to play with Dave’s chips and the libelous remarks leveled at Richard, who was beginning to build a healthy lead by stealing pots without having to show any cards. Scurrilous accusations were loudly voiced that he was betting with nothing.

Attention was soon to be diverted from this defamation, however, as the first period of high-stakes betting began. It was Matthew who survived the first scare. Calling Caroline's all-in, his A9 narrowly won over A8, with both hands hitting two pairs on the board.

Soon after Caroline was all-in again, this time with 86 and an open-ended straight draw after the flop. After much consideration, Matthew decided that his AK was still ahead and called again. The straight didn't come, Matthew doubled up once more, and Caroline was out.

Caroline was good enough to take over dealing duties, and a brief period of watchfulness followed. But it was only the quiet before the storm. Another spell of frenzied betting soon saw Richard’s honestly-accumulated stack come under threat as he called a succession of all-in bets.

In the space of five minutes, Anton and Mark each threw caution to the wind, hit pairs on the board and doubled up. But Mark’s luck wasn’t to last. Going all-in again shortly after with a pair of Kings, Richard called with 78-suited, hit a flush on the turn, and Mark was out.

Going into the bubble, all three players were in with a shot at the prize. After another tightly-contested spell, soon after 10pm the do-or-die bets began again. First Anton went all-in with 910 suited, Richard called with A4, and Anton doubled up with a pair on the turn. Moments later and Matthew was all-in with K4. Richard called with J10, hit a 10 on the flop and Matthew was out.

Truth be told there was absolutely no excitement at the prospect of a heads-up contest between Anton and Richard, who in three earlier hands had both steadfastly refused to do anything but check in what was turning into a ludicrous stalemate.

In the end though the gallery was spared the agony of a drawn-out stand-off when Anton went all-in with A7 in the first hand and Richard called with AQ. The flop revealed another queen, Anton was drawing dead by the river, and Richard was the winner.

So until next time, when maybe i'll even get some good cards...

January 8th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
4 players, £8 pool

1st Anton £8
2nd Dave
3rd Richard
4th Emma

A rather depleted game this week due to people being in rehearsals or still away for the holidays but an exciting one nonetheless. Before we started I was thinking that we may have time for two games with such a short-handed table but this turned out to be the longest game of the season, finishing at 10.15, just in time for the winner to fritter the winnings away on a victory round.

Play was steady for the first hour with the chips passing back and forth and no real winners or losers emerging. The first moment of excitement came when Richard went all-in at 8.35 only to find M folding. Another all-in came at 8.57 when Dave threw down the gauntlet with a board of 10, 7, 10, Q. Richard appeared tempted but perhaps influenced by the proximity of the break decided to take the cautious road and fold.

The action cranked up a notch after the break when in the first hand Richard went all-in after a flop of A, 7, 3 and Emma called! Richard showed A,10 to Emma's A, 9 and the best hand held up leaving Emma crippled.

Not one to eschew the opportunity to give a friend a good kicking when she is down Anton put Emma all-in next hand, Dave boldly ran away and M called, knowing that she only had a couple of hands before the blinds ate her stack. Anton showed A, J, Emma showed K, 4 and then things got interesting. Anton was way ahead before the flop but when the 5, 6, and 7 of clubs came down Emma had a straight draw that filled on the turn with the 8 of hearts. Anton however had a club in his hand so needed another on the river to make his flush. The queen of clubs appeared and after much drama Emma was first out.

Only a few minutes later Anton doubled up as he went all-in with 10, 10 and Richard called with a pair of twos which failed to improve.

Soon afterwards there was deja vu all over again as Anton went all in with A, K, Dave called with A, 5 and managed to hit trip 5s on a flop of 5, 5, 8! Once again, however Anton got a reprieve as he made a diamond flush on the river. Demonds!

The clock ticked on and we passed the 10 o'clock mark for the first time in several years! at 10.08 Richard went all-in with J, 6 and Anton, on the big blind did not have to put in much more to make the call with K, 6. Richard failed to improve and went out.

This left Anton and Dave heads-up and three hands in Dave put in a biggish raise before the flop and Anton re-raised all in, Dave called. Anton showed A, 10 to Dave's A, 4 and Anton won the pot with an unneccesary 10 on the river.

See you all next week. The game will be on and at the usual time of 7.00.

All the best

January 15th 2012
Sunday evening SLT £2 freezeout
7 players, £14 pool

1st Emma £10
2nd Anton £4
3rd Dave
4th Catherine
5th Mark
6th Jack
7th Richard

The biggest turnout of the 2011/12 season also saw a first win for Emma, some Casino Royale-style clashing of big hands, the debut appearance of Anton's cucumber and Mark's crumpet, and the intervention of the devil. Not bad for a Sunday evening down the bar.

Perhaps it was the larger number of players, or perhaps the amount of alcohol that had been consumed by several competitors before the start, but we were almost straight into the action with some early forcing bets hoping to reduce the field.

In what seems to be developing into a dangerous habit, Richard was all-in within the first half-hour. He was a danger to no one but himself, though. Hitting two pairs on a flop of 8-Q-4, he committed the schoolboy error of waiting a card too long to go all-in. A 9 on the turn gave Anton a straight, he called duly called and Richard was out just before 7.30pm.

A few minutes later and it was Catherine's turn to force the betting. But there were no takers for her all-in bet, Jack and Anton preferring to rely on a steady accumulation of chips to create some early clear water between them and the rest of the field. Anton was guilty of some early breaches of cucumber etiquette, but no punishments were imposed, and after an initial warning he managed to control his worst excesses.

As if to raise the stakes, at 8.20pm Satan himself decided to intervene in the game. Dave was all-in with A-J and had been called by Jack, with Q-8 suited, when a beastly flop of 6-6-6 had everyone reaching for the salt. For the time being at least, the Prince of Darkness was clearly on Dave's side, a Jack on the turn and an Ace on the river giving him a choice of full houses.

Clearly shaken by the experience, four players were out in the following 30 minutes. At 8.28pm, Jack went all-in on a board of 4-4-8, but Emma's pair of 8s gave her a full house and Jack was out.

Two minutes later and Mark was all-in with a mighty pair of 2s. Anton called with pocket 9s, the board proved no use to anyone, and Mark too was out, his lucky crumpet apparently not so lucky after all.

At 8.35pm Catherine went all-in with J-8 and Emma called with A-J of diamonds. Catherine paired an 8 on the turn, but it was also the third diamond on the board, Emma made a flush and Catherine was out.

A few minutes before the break, Dave was all-in with A-6 suited and Emma, with K-2, called again. This time the devil had clearly deserted Dave's cause, Emma made trip-Kings and Dave was out.

Just as it was impossible to imagine the action getting any more dramatic, the after-break resumption saw a hand worthy of Ian Fleming himself. For the second time in the evening there were trips on the flop - this time three 2s - despite odds against a flopped 3-of-a-kind of 424-1. Chips poured into the middle as Anton hit a full-house on the turn, but his boat was to prove no match for Emma's four of a kind.

Now reduced to a severe chip deficit, Anton 'Le Chiffre' Krause was soon all-in with K-4. Emma, holding K-9, called. A flop of 6-J-A maintained Emma's lead, but a subsequent 10-K meant the kickers became irrelevant and the pot was split.

At just after 9.45pm, Anton decided to put faith in his cucumber alone. Challenged to go all-in blind, he did just that. Emma called, but her 8-9 suited proved no match for Anton's Jack-high.

But Anton's salad-inspired survival was to prove unsustainable. Just as the clock ticked past 10pm for the second week running, he was all-in again with 10-2. Emma called with J-9, and with both players pairing their high card on the board, the Jack prevailed and Emma took her first victory. Just don't suggest the devil had anything to do with it...

See you all soon for more of the same.

Apologies for a late report this week. This is not for the last game but the one before that. This report is doubly doomed due to the fact that a) we have had another game since this one which has replaced it in my feeble memory and b) I am working from Richard's notes. But here we go.

Some poker happened. But Richard didn't write it down.

At 8.47 Mark went all-in with K, 10 - Catherine called with A, Q and needlessly improved to a straight, knocking Mark out.

At 9.30 Catherine claimed another victim, knocking Gavin out with Ak against AQ.

Some other things happened that I can't read.

We moved tables.

At 10.00 Catherine went all in with Q, 5, Richard called with K, 2 and sent Catherine packing when he made quad 2s on the river!

At 10.10 Anton went all-in with A, 10 and Chris, who has not previously appeared in this report, called with A, 9 and got lucky making a straight and then a flush to knock Anton out. Justice was not served. Probably.

Chris got his come-uppance at 10.20 however when he went all in with K, 7 and Richard called with 5, 2 and hit trip 5s.

Congratulations to Richard.
