So, I found myself with an unexpected evening off from doing up my flat last Saturday, and as it's been a few weeks since I played, I was absolutely gagging for a game!
So I phoned up my mate Shane to find out if he knew of any games, and found out he was invited to a pub game by one of the girls who goes to the free Tuesday games.
The pub was the Victoria Park pub, near Bethnal Green/Mile End, and apparently they play every Thursday & Saturday.

The game was a £10 freeze out, winner takes all.
Start with £3000 in chips. Blinds go up every 15mins.
There were 16 players, and we kicked off aroung 21:30.
Now - Shane and I decided before hand that we'd split the winnings 50/50 if either of us won. Unfortutately we didn't talk about team tactics if we got down to the situation with both of us on the final table.
The game started with 2 tables, and Shane and I were on seperate tables so I wasn't really sure how he was doing.
Everyone at my table were quite friendly (I was it bit wary at first with it being Hackney an' all), and they all seemed to know their poker. I was definately the odd one out as they all know each other quite well. I guess this is what it's like when newbies join the theatre games.
Anyway, I won a few early hands which resulted in the rest of the players giving me a fair bit of respect in subsequent hands (which I of course used to my advantage).
I think I played pretty well, and didn't make many mistakes.
My biggest decision so far was to throw away a pair of 10s which someone has raised all-in when (I think) only a jack was on the board.
Anyway, we carried on playing till we were down to 8 players in total, then we had a break before starting the final table.
Shane and I both made it onto the final table, and it was then that things got interesting.
Although the blinds were pretty high, I had enough chips to play sensibly without getting desperate.
I stole a few chips early on from hands where only myself and Shane were contesting. Although it was good to win chips, tactically it made sense not to win them off my teammate.
Anyway we carried on till the shortstacks were all gone, then eventually Shane and I got down to the final 3. This basically meant that once the other guy was knocked out we'd be in the money!
I guess this is when the team tactics really came into it, but to be honest, there was probably only one hand in which I played differently had I been playing on my own (Shane was all in pre-flop, called by the 3rd player, and I really wanted to play my hand, but figured it'd be a disaster if Shane and I both lost our chips to #3).
As it turned out, Shane knocked out #3 (though i'd have won both their chips had I played the hand I folded).
It didn't really matter cos at that point we were in the money.
We played on anyway, cos we had an audience, and I still wanted to win. Though I made chip lead for a bit, my all in A Q lost to a crappy flop which dented my stack sufficient enough for me not to come back from.
So Shane won - £160 total.
The winner buys a round for everyone (£30), so all in all we pocketed £65 each. (We didn't let on we were splitting the dosh, so had to do it in secret in the toilets. I felt like a right East End gangster hehe)
It was about 01:30 in the morning, and pretty much everyone was still hanging around, and they were up for starting another game. Not for me though.
So I said my goodbyes and everyone shook my hand (very friendly bunch) and cycled off back home dreaming of what to spend my winnings on - Will it be plaster board for the ceiling, or wood for the floor joists........ _________________ "Look into my eyes, look into my eyes..." |
