Rees was telling me that the pub up the road from the theatre had started running poker nights.

They are every Thursday from 20:00 at The Horns Tavern, which is the pub opposite West Norwood train station.

I've been in the pub a few times to watch the football (and one fun Karaoke night with a few theatre bods!)

I'm not too sure of the format or stakes - Rees did say, but I can't remember.

Any poker queens fancy checking it out?

Damn - busy this week. And next, actually, now I think about it. But will definitely give it a go - especially as they've done up their little bit of outside with nice heaters and parasols ...

Yep, I wen't along, as did Christian.

It's £10 to play, with £5 going towards a 'buffet', and the other £5 going towards the pot.

I think that's the format of most of these pub poker games. It's sort of an incentive for the landlord/lady to host games, with £5 from each player in return for a wee bit food.

Anyway, you get 1500 in chips to start with, and then regardless of whether or not you're knocked out, you come back in in the second half with another 1500 chips.

The blinds so up pretty big - 25/50, 50/100, 100/200, 200/400, then 400/800, 800/1600, 1500/3000!

I think we were at the 400/800 stage at the start of the second half, so the folk that did come back into in pretty much went out in a couple of hands.

The night started with about 16 players - 2 full tables.
I went to a seperate tabe than Christian & Rees, so there would be a better chance of us all appearing on the final table.

Christian and I made the final table.
Christian went out 5th, and I was 4th.
(Found out later that top 3 pay out. Bugger. I could've just waited)

The good things about the night.
Well, as ever, you're in a pub full of locals, so there were a lot of characters around.

If you finish well in the league, you go on to regional tournaments, with seats in major competitions as prizes.

The blind clock is a cute little egg timer.

The bad things about it.

Well, where do I start........

I think i've become a bit of a poker snob, in as much as everywhere I play now has nice cards, so when confronted with some sticky paper ones I wasn't too impressed, though that was the least of my problems

Ok, Lets get it out of my system then.

When my table started 3 players - Yes 3, were currently involved in a cash game at the other end of the pub. They just weren't interested in playing in the tourney. It's fair enough to be blinded in a couple of hands but was just too disruption when it was their turn to deal.

When the chaps finally came to our table, you could tell that they just weren't interested - and quickly threw their chips away.

About 6 mins into my game, pretty much everyone decared a fag brake!
Hang on - The blind clock was ticking. I was sat at the table on my own wondering what the hell was going on. We eventually got on with the game about 5 mins later after some order was restored.

Everyone chucks all their chips in the middle. So all the blinds have to be in a pot in the middle of the table before we start. Then when people call or raise, their chips go straight into the middle. Not in front of the players but in the big pile of chips in the middle. Some folk were putting chips in and taking change, but with so many chips in the middle it was hard to see or verify the bet.
I was struggling to keep up!

We didn't play with a cut card.

Card handling: Some people liked to fold by raising their cards way up in the air before hitting the table. Even when I discretely folded, my cards were being picked up and flown around the poker airspace before landing on the muck.
Some dealers insisted on bending up the folded cards just ever so slightly when putting them on the bottom of the deck. (hard to explain - Will give a demo) - All this made me paranoid!

Breaking up the tables. There was none. We went down to 3 players on our table, and there were still 8 on the other. We were told to just carry on.

Show one show all rule - Nah, just show your mate.

String bets ahoy!

Cheating - Yep, there was a bit of cheating of sorts going on. When one guy raised a 200 bet on the river to 1000, the guy with the original 200 bet, knowing he had the nuts, said to his mate "you only meant to call didn't you. I've got a flush" (or whatever), then gave his mate 800 out of the winnings)

The buffet. Fine if you're on the Atkins diet, but not so much as a crisp or a chip for me Surprised

OK, I'm probably making this sound worse that in was.

But I have to say that I doubt any of you would enjoy playing here.
It's just not a decent game of poker.

The thing is, you can't really blame anyone for it.
They've learnt in the pub, probably for a laugh. All the players are regulars in the pub, so it really is just a bit of fun.
If you learn things like - You've got to put your chips in the middle, that's the way you play.
If you've never played with a cut card before, you wouldn't notice.
If you don't know what a phantom dealer is (and to be honest - It took us about a year play with one), you wouldn't miss one.

Pub poker is what it is. A game of poker with some pub punters. It's not a casino, or a poker club, it's just a fun thing to do before the footie season kicks off.

The thing is - The play at my table was actually quite good. No-one asking "Who's turn is it", "How much is it to me", "Can I check".
I've got mates from work who play is Shanes home games (and have done for about a year) and they still ask these questions.)

Some of the hands that were coming up were unbelievable though. Quads, several full houses, a straight flush! It was amazing to watch (I had none of them).

So, If you want to play some poker, stick to the poker clubs and give this one a miss (sorry Rees).

Oh, and another thing.

When I wen't out in 4th place I offered to deal.
I was told NO (kind of like I was being told off for doing something wrong).

They don't like that sort of thing here.

Also, when I put in a raise, i'd say "Raise to 1200 in total"
Nobody liked me saying that at my table. It had to be "Raise 800"

I got pulled up a could of timed for saying "in total".

Oh, and one more thing.

They had some computer consoles (like gameboys) on some of the pub tables, that were linked to the tv screen.

I dont know the ins and outs of it, but some peope were playing poker with the little consoles.

I don't know if they were all playing together in the same tournament, or for how much, I just haven't seen those things before.
